Kelly criterion estimates: Expose win-probability and payoff uncertainty before interpreting a sizing formula from a short options history.

A weekly-options success story prompted questions about sizing estimates from a short history. The reviewed Reddit post was published July 31, 2026. Its author results were not independently reproduced, and the available comment tree remains incomplete. The exercise below is our original research proposal, not a replication of the post.

A sizing estimate is an output of a payoff model. Before using it, ask what one observation represents: a contract, a spread, an expiration week, or an entire account. Several contracts exposed to the same event are not independent evidence. A handful of successful weeks can leave the loss distribution largely unobserved.

Kelly criterion estimates: exercise: separate edge from exposure

Create twelve fictional weekly observations: ten gains of one unit and two losses of four units. Their total is two units. Now replace one gain with a loss of eight units. The total becomes negative seven units without changing eleven observations. This is an arithmetic sensitivity exercise, not a prediction of option returns or a recommendation to risk a particular fraction.

Repeat the calculation under different contract quantities, keeping commissions and spread costs in dollars. Record the largest capital requirement during the week, including simultaneous positions. A return on premium and a return on account equity answer different questions; show the denominator beside every percentage. Remove deposits and withdrawals before interpreting trading performance.

Test the missing situations

Prespecify a gap scenario, several losses in adjacent weeks, and an exit price worse than the displayed mark. Do not assume a stop guarantees the modeled loss. Keep contract multipliers, expiration dates and settlement terms attached to each observation. Unknown payoff tails should remain unknown rather than being filled with a convenient normal distribution.

A useful research report puts the sizing estimate beside a sensitivity table, not inside a single authoritative recommendation. Compare an unchanged position quantity across the scenarios first. Otherwise a new sizing rule may hide the deterioration in the underlying payoff model. If a proposed fraction changes sharply after one hypothetical loss, the practical finding is estimation fragility.

Put the setup on a watchlist first

Additional validation

For this options worksheet, keep a separate column for maximum contractual loss and another for modeled exit loss. They can differ substantially. If either value is unavailable, flag that row before calculating a sizing statistic. Review whether a single expiration event affects several observations and group the exposure before treating the sample as repeated evidence.

Evidence and workspace use

Primary reference: The Probability of Backtest Overfitting provides background for this experiment, not validation of the Reddit strategy. Treat invented numbers above as arithmetic fixtures. Preserve the dataset, configuration and timestamp conventions with the output so another researcher can inspect the same calculation.

Find the offline workflow through Tradewink Advisory Research. Choose a synthetic sample before importing offline JSON. Start in an advisory research workspace: save a small input fixture, write the expected result by hand, then compare the implemented output. Expand the dataset only after the fixture balances. Keep unresolved assumptions visible in the report and retain adverse outcomes. Synthetic research output does not establish live execution behavior. For sizing background, read position sizing; for broader context, see risk management.

Continue the research

Portfolio Backtests: Include Carry and Shared Risk and Bitcoin Trading Features: Audit Redundant Inputs develop adjacent checks. Use a small synthetic fixture first; these educational diagnostics do not validate a trading edge or change account settings.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the unit of evidence?

Use a complete expiration-week account outcome when contracts share the same event exposure.

What makes a sizing estimate fragile?

A plausible change to one loss changes the estimated allocation substantially. Report that sensitivity rather than a precise recommended fraction.

Should deposits count as strategy gains?

No. Separate external cash flows from trading equity changes before estimating account returns.

Were the Reddit results independently verified?

No. The post and rendered replies informed the question; returns, datasets and linked implementations were not reproduced.

Does this authorize live trading changes?

No. This is an educational advisory exercise. A research result is separate from deployment and broker execution.
