Cross-asset backtests: Match contract multipliers, sessions and cash conventions before ranking unlike instruments.
A cross-asset results request contained accounting questions and outcome-based asset exclusions. The reviewed Reddit post was published October 10, 2026. Its author results were not independently reproduced, and the available comment tree remains incomplete. The exercise below is our original research proposal, not a replication of the post.
A multiasset comparison begins with comparable accounts. Different contract multipliers, trading sessions and margin conventions can make identical percentage labels describe very different risks. Before ranking instruments, reconcile quantities and cash.
Cross-asset backtests: exercise: explain ending equity
Start a fictional account at $5,000. Add $400 in closed gains, subtract $100 in fees and leave an open position with a $50 loss. With no external cash flows, ending marked equity is $5,250. If a table instead shows $5,400, determine whether it excludes costs, open exposure or both. Do not normalize the unexplained table into a convincing chart.
Apply the same entry information cutoff, execution rule and evaluation interval to two fictional assets. Adjust quantities using each contract's multiplier and record the maximum exposure. A trade returning one price point in each market need not produce the same dollar outcome.
Keep selection visible
Prespecify which assets qualify and why. Excluding an asset after seeing its loss is an additional research choice, even if the exclusion sounds economically plausible. Freeze that rule and assess it prospectively rather than presenting the surviving set as the original experiment.
Check that starting cash plus all ledger movements equals ending equity. Test multiplier conversions with a one-contract example. Test whether the report includes unrealized PnL consistently and whether a missing asset remains visible. Increasing simulation count can reduce sampling noise in the chosen algorithm; it cannot fix a capital bridge that does not balance or recover the trials omitted from the comparison.
Put the setup on a watchlist first
Use the rules in this guide to evaluate a signal’s entry, stop, target, and reasoning before deciding what, if anything, to do.

Additional validation
For each asset, include a one-unit conversion fixture that maps a price movement into dollars. Keep settlement adjustments and open-position marks in separate ledger fields. If an instrument has no compatible data on a common evaluation date, show the missing eligibility rather than pretending the capital was deployed there. This makes capital comparisons inspectable before performance ranking.
Evidence and workspace use
Primary reference: The Probability of Backtest Overfitting provides background for this experiment, not validation of the Reddit strategy. Treat invented numbers above as arithmetic fixtures. Preserve the dataset, configuration and timestamp conventions with the output so another researcher can inspect the same calculation.
Find the offline workflow through Tradewink Advisory Research. Choose a synthetic sample before importing offline JSON. Start in an advisory research workspace: save a small input fixture, write the expected result by hand, then compare the implemented output. Expand the dataset only after the fixture balances. Keep unresolved assumptions visible in the report and retain adverse outcomes. Synthetic research output does not establish live execution behavior. For sizing background, read position sizing; for broader context, see risk management.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should reconcile before asset ranking?
Starting equity, quantities, multipliers, realized and unrealized outcomes, fees and external cash flows.
Why preserve excluded assets?
Excluding them after seeing outcomes changes the selection process and must remain visible.
Can more simulations fix missing costs?
No. They repeat the chosen assumptions more precisely without repairing the account ledger.
Were the Reddit results independently verified?
No. The post and rendered replies informed the question; returns, datasets and linked implementations were not reproduced.
Does this authorize live trading changes?
No. This is an educational advisory exercise. A research result is separate from deployment and broker execution.
